A thorough  medical exam and drug screening is required as one of the final steps in the law enforcement hiring process. This exam is typical of any physical you have had previously in your life. The drug screening is also common in many jobs nowadays. The exam will include the following:

  • General Health Metrics – height, weight, temperature and medical history.

  • Blood test for serious diseases or illegal substances.

  • Urine sample – looking for illegal substances.

  • Hair Sample – sometime used for prior drug use.

  • Flexibility Test – part of physical readiness check.

  • Smell test – make sure your nose works.

  • Eye Exam (Typical standard) Applicants who wear eye glasses or contact lenses must meet minimum standards of visual acuity. Vision with corrective lenses should not be less than 20/20 in the better eye, 20/40 in the worst eye, and 20/20 with both eyes open. Uncorrected vision should not be less than 20/200 in either eye. Can you differentiate colors accurately?

  • Hearing test for minimum department standards?

  • Stress Test – usually conducted with some form of cardio monitor to see how your body reacts to physical stress and how well your heart returns to normal heartrate.

  • Drug Screen – bring any of your doctor’s prescriptions you normally use in case the drug test picks them up. Any illegal substances detected during this screen will immediately eliminate you for the hiring process.
